About the project KLAR – Recognizable and Legible Car and Bicycle Infrastructure
The clarity of traffic routing is crucial, as ambiguity can lead to conflicts and accidents. Similarly, the clarity of bicycle infrastructure has a significant impact on how often bicycles are used as a mode of transportation. The project looks at urban infrastructure from the perspectives of both cyclists and motorists. At the same time, we aim to develop new tools that enable virtual testing of the infrastructure, since real-world road tests are costly and offer little flexibility. For experimental testing, a vehicle driving simulator will be coupled with a bicycle simulator at the DigitalCubeTestCenter (DCTC) so that interaction between two test participants can take place in the same virtual environment. This is where crowdsourcing comes into play: To create realistic traffic scenarios in the virtual environment, we want to use the traffic locations you’ve marked as a starting point.

The goal of this study is to gain insights into the design of bicycle infrastructure. Based on these findings, design recommendations for urban transportation infrastructure will be developed that, on the one hand, reduce conflicts between cyclists and motorists and, on the other hand, make cycling easier and increase the appeal of the bicycle as a mode of transportation. The design recommendations will then be clearly illustrated in a practical handbook intended for a non-academic audience.
